Neckties Used for Chair

Recent design graduate, Amanda Phelps, shares her Tie Required piece:  “I wanted to recreate a platform rocker that my grandma has.  I began to look around and found a chair at a thrift store at home.  I bought it for $10 and reused the hardware and also studied the proportions.  Also, I was planning on upholstering the chair with a fabric that I would dye/create.  To keep myself busy, I had the idea of making a pillow for the soon to be created chair.  I purchased ties at a thrift store that had a pleasing color scheme and sewed them together to make the accent pillow (it is sewn like an envelope).  My dad was confused and thought I was going to upholster the chair with ties…thus an idea was born.  Rather than having to cut apart and sew the silky fabric (which is difficult) I thought about just sewing the ties together in their entirety.  Then we came up with the idea of weaving them and eliminating the need to sew anything.”  Amanda’s friends and family collected ties for her and sent them to her for her chair.  To contact Amanda, email her at amphelps2011@gmail.com
